Graphemic parsing – This is the process by which a letter string is converted to the grapheme string (“grapheme” means a letter or a letter group that corresponds to a single phoneme, as in the concrete context the grapheme is the written equivalent of the phoneme).

Grapheme-phoneme conversion – This is the process in which the grapheme string is converted to the phoneme string by a set of grapheme-phoneme conversion rules which are valid for the concrete language (piecemeal phonology).

Phoneme integration – This is the process by which the phonemes are integrated into a unitary phonological representation. In the case of oral reading, this phonological representation is introduced into the phonological buffer (a type of working memory), where it is stored and retains an active form during the subsequent processing phase of its transformation (element-by-element) into a format appropriate for articulation.
